I do the same and have never had ANY troubles.It makes sense to leave the real important stuff in the hotel safe at reception and it's no real hassle to access it when needed.
It pays to leave a small tip for the room attendants also,as mentioned in an earlier post.It's amzing how well you get looked after if you look after others.
