years we holidayed in Bali and stayed in room 16 at the Kuta Beach hotel - right on the beach.

In 1988 we bought land in Legian and built a villa whih in those days was a real task as everything was made on site.
Much easier to build now.

After that Bali changed for us as there was the responsibility of running and training staff, maintainance etc that used to be the responsibility of the hotel we stayed.
You are also dealing with greedy government people and lots of other things tourists don't get involved with.
I even had my passport confiscated completely illegally by police a few years back. To get it back I had to go to headquarters for "interrogation" which got heavier and heavier.
In the end I faked a heart attack and the threatened charges were dropped but it still cost 3 million to get them to return my passport.
My crime was that when they arrived I was on the internet so I breaching my visa by "working." It was a scam they were using at the time as a revenue raiser which was closed down after I explained how it worked to the Consul and he made an official complaint.

After 20 years things are just fine but I don't think people realise that once you own something in Bali everything changes and it is never again the place it was when you rented..
