Part of the problem is that the AUD has declined vs the USD. In the past year it almost reached parity (1.01 AU for 1.00 US) and has since declined. Since hotels are priced in USD this means the prices went down for you and then back up as the USD increase in value. And I think a lot of hotel owners raised their prices because the AUD was so strong.
With the world wide recession, prices should come back down some.
