We flew to KL last September - The terminal was under renovation when we were there. I think it has finished and been improved since then (hope so - great big stratco shed). There were duty free shops at the terminal selling the usual stuff. Not sure about putting the alcohol in your luggage but its probably correct - saw a guy lose a few nice bottles at Bangkok airport conncecting to Phuket because they were not still sealed from duty free.
