It is law that you register wherever you stay,even private homes, and some places get you to fill in a form on which you have to put name,home address, passport number etc and others will photocopy your passport details.There is no harm in them doing this as a photocopy of a passport is of no use to anyone,it is YOUR picture on there after all,especially with modern passports having a chip in them for verification purposes.
