My wife and myself are in our early sixties and may be old fashioned, but we have only given our credit card number over the phone to a hotel, but NEVER the security number on the back of the card. We have just arrived back from Vietnam and the hotel asked us to leave our passports with them for security. I told the Manager that I wouldn't leave the passport with him under any circumstances and that if this meant us leaving the hotel then so be it. He agreed that I could keep our passports, so it is worth kicking up a fuss. I personally wouldn't give anyone a copy of my passport. We have also stayed in Bali over 10 times and never asked for a copy of passport so I agree with santika, sounds a bit fishy and chippy to me!
