We had no real understanding of the currency, we got dragged up an ally by the first bloke who said he would give us a great deal, then we were surrounded by 5 blokes shoving singlets, shirts, sunglasses and watches at us all at the same time. we were trying to watch our fronts and backs, and just wanted to get out of there. We ended up buying 2 shirts and 2 sunglasses for 600,000 Rp. which they told us they would have sold the same to Americans for 2 mil.
After we got out of there we had time to think and we realised that it had just cost us nearly AU$100.
We just wanted to go home as we were so overwhelmed.
When we got back to the hotel we met some people from perth who could see we were first timers as well as the locals could lol.
They then showed us around and where to shop and eat, and we then grew to love Bali.
The currency is hard to get used to on first trip and the sellers can tell you are a first timer and will take advantage of this. Just take a day to get used to it all.
Cheers Mark and Heather
