I honestly wouldnt consider the thought of not hiring a car again.
Same as home, you have your independence!
Get your International drivers licence and hire a car for a day or two. Give it a go.
We also used the Periplus street atlas and that was usually helpful. Some areas have good signs to indicate which turn takes you to which place. Its great if you are looking for tourist spots, eg Bali Zoo. They had signs on most intersections in the area.
My first drive was early, maybe 7.30am, on our way to the new Legian early morning markets. Gave me my confidence to venture out again.
