Have done it heaps of times. Also I have been many times for a month and as I travel around, I just negotiate as I go.
Heaps of places in Poppies I and II, you can just arrive and book a night or two then investage a bit further for something that suits your needs better.
Does get a bit harder between Xmas and New Year, but not impossible.
You can definatley get better walk up rates in many places in Bali rather than pre-booking.
