I can only presume you are not a parent or at least not a parent of a teenager or have adult child.
A few years ago I took my daughter to Perth the week of her 18th birthday & my elderly Mum came at the same time to attend a family wedding.

On that trip my Mum spent a lot of time with elderly family members in Perth while my daughter & myself had a great time "bonding".We have also taken our now adult daughter to Malaysia with us in recent years & we both really enjoyed spending time with her = aka " bonding".We have also travelled throughout Australia & overseas including Bali with our son as a teenager & felt the same about spending time with him.
I think it's great getting to know more or learn about your child's life as they are growing into an adult, you can develop a new appreciation of your off spring.

To put it in your words,I think there is something "not quite natural" & feel it's rather sad if teenage or adult kids hate spending time together with their parents or vice versa.
Not all parents or kids dislike each other!
