(if you haven't already read my reply post to Pak Munkin) would be to simply go to your bank here in Oz and buy the correct amount of US dollars.The dollar or two (if any) that you might be worse off is peanuts.
Being a first-timer,it will be in your best interests if you don't get held up when you get to immigration in Bali.
Less complicated is better at the airport especially when there's long queues.
If you have to stuff around with exchange rates,getting the correct change,etc.etc. then it's just another thing you have to deal with and think about and believe me you will want to get in and out of the airport as quickly and painlessly as you can.
