We stayed in the Melia a few of years ago. The hotel is very nice, has a pool that you just gradually walk into and is on the beach, nice staff etc. You can walk around the beach side to a shopping centre but its very upmarket and expensive compared to Kuta/Legian. We hardly ate there either, expensive for both food and drinks. My partner booked this as a suprise xmas present and at that time he didn't know anything about Bali, he just took the travel agents advice, lol.
I'm afraid I am not too keen on Nusa Dua, its too far away from good shopping and restaurants, in my opinion.
Hope you enjoy your holiday no matter where you stay.
We are in our 50s too, but still like the hustle and bustle of the more popular areas.
