My choice with kids over 10 would be 2 rooms. That way you have 2 bathrooms.:)
The distance from the apartments to the pools is not great, a few minutes walk unless you are up flights of stairs , but you get a better view and are near the beach in the main body of the hotel.
My friends never have trouble with interconnecting rooms.
