I have been hiring motorcycles in Bali since 1975.

Two days ago, I returned a bike after 20 days hire. I paid Rp 20,000 per day without insurance. I brought my own helmet and gloves from Australia. I also wore lots of suncreen on my face and neck. I also wore elastic sided boots and a thick long sleeved shirt.

Before accepting a bike, check:
* no more than 1 inch slack in the chain
* plenty of tread on the tyres
* Put your foot on the rear brake pedal and push hard, the bike should not move
* Squeeze the front brake lever and push hard, the bike should not move

I paid Rp 20,000 per day as the bike was a 2005 model with a semi-automatic gearbox. An automatic scooter would have cost me Rp 25,000 per day.

Petrol is Rp 4,500 per litre from service stations. It costs Rp 5,000 per litre from a bottle.
