I think you might mean 'Jangan' - which mean's don't. You pronounce it (I think!) with a J sound that's like the J in "juice" and a soft G sound (sorry, I can't think of any English words with the soft, almost gutteral G sound that's common to Bahasa Indonesian, but it's not the hard G sound as in 'go').
I don't think 'Jangan' is incredibly harsh - you can use it in the sense of 'Jangan kuatir' ("Don't worry"), or, or course, to tell someone not to do something. I'm not sure how it would go down with hawkers!
Corn is Jagung.
