Hi
Just wanted to share some memories with everyone. My husband Tom and I have been to Bali 10 times and the first time we went in 1995(very much Bali virgins!) we were held up for 32 and half hours. We arrived in Denpasar at 1.15 in the morning and were taken up to Ubud we arrived about 2.30. Really needing a Bintang my husband and friend went to reception and the TV was on with Mrs.Suharto's funeral playing. Our friend remarked on this and he was told "No politics" As things were quite differant then.
Another memory is of Tom's stay in hospital in Denpasar in 1998 when he hurt his back. So very differant to the hospitals in NZ. All the nurses looked about 15. He was given a wash everyday (as he couldn't get out of bed) with the same cloth and towel, and they left his undies on! He was there for 9 days. Another memory is me trying to get a taxi at one in the morning outside the hospital. In the end the guard (who always seemed to be there) came and waveddown a taxi for me. It was an old dunger of a taxi driven by a boy who
looked about 12. He could not speak English, but I managed to get him to understand me. I told him Sanur in a loud voice and he stopped once we got to Sanur. I managed to get him to take me to the house we staying in, he did look scared to death of me a 5ft 2in rather large lady dressed in shorts and tee shirt with me wallet tucked in my shorts, thanks to the guard. I bet that taxi driver wondered what I was doing at 0ne in the morning outside a hospital in Denpasar.
Cheers Carol
