While in Bali a few weeks back now, we did what I had seen recommended on the BTF and that was to buy a "Smartphone" from Carrefour supermarket. They cost 120,000rp(about A$17 ea) and you get 120,000rp of free calls and messages, in other words the handset is free. They are quite neat little handsets, easy to use and come with a charger etc. The gentlemen who sold them to us set them up, we bought 3, 1 each for my kids 1 for me and they were excellent value and easy to keep in contact with the kids and other friends who also bought one. They do not work with other sim cards(telstra) so they are no use to you once you leave Bali but you could just give them to a local you may know or keep them until the next trip. You can top up the sim at almost any service place in Bali. When you buy them they will show you how to call back to Australia etc I think you dial 1033 then the number but it only costs 1000rp a minute to call OZ. It's certainly a cheap easy option, rather than paying to have your phone unlocked if you are already locked into a plan
