Uncanny ATM scam uncovered, busted

Kuta Police named two people as suspects in an alleged scam targeting people trying to make withdrawals at ATMs at one of the island's largest hypermarkets.
Chief of the Kuta Police criminal investigation unit, Sec. Insp. Made Karsa, said the two suspects, who were arrested Sunday, were identified as Mahat, 31, and Nurul Fajri, 24.
Karsa said the two had confessed to rigging a Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) ATM at the Carrefour hypermarket in southern Denpasar.
He said the two regularly made trips to big cities in Java, including Jakarta and Surabaya, as well as Denpasar, to carry out the scam.
"The suspects committed the crime in Bogor before they flew to Denpasar on Friday evening. Mahat confessed to successfully rigging an ATM center on Jl. Pantai Kuta in Badung," Karsa said.
He said the suspects, who had previously evaded arrest, usually operated on weekends when bank offices were closed, so the customer could not go to the bank until the following Monday.
The arrest was made after a customer reported to a bank employee that he could not retract his ATM card.
The bank employee who checked the machine noticed it had been tampered with and immediately called police.
Mahat and Nurul will be charged under Article 362 of the Criminal Code on robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
