wish there is no "rule' about return with same airline.
Some Airlines offer "return" specials at times so be aware of that.
However many travellers choose different airlines to/from because of times as well. DRW - DPS -DRW for eg Garuda offer a morning arrival so many choose that flight. Yet their return from Bali is wee hours of the morning so its better to have the Airnorth mid night arrival home. Your money your choice.
