As mentioned, hiring a driver is always a good start. There are a couple of day tours that you can do, such as Ubud, Denpasar, Kintamani, Lovina and Ulu Watu etc. Since your about my age, the White Water rafting is a cheap day out. About 250,000 rupiah per person (may be able to get it cheaper as you are a double ~$30 AUD each). They pick you up, drive you there and take you white water rafting for a couple of hours. The ride is pritty tame but fun. The view is fantastic. It is finished by a nice lunch normally included in the price. Another thing which is not too cheap but I may actually try this time is clumbing Mt Batur (a volcano) to watch the sun rise (I think about $60 AUD each but may be quite a bit cheaper as you are a couple). Alteratively, shopping is always good. I did not think much of the Benoa Harbour cruises at night, but it may be romantic (if your a couple) if you choose the right one. The Lembangon (can never spell it correct) day cruise is good but pricey. Alternatively, a long day trip going to Boro Batur and Prambanan (can never spell it correctly) in Java is a very long but fantastic day. Roughly $160 each including airfares last year.

Hope this helps a bit
