we had to paid for the visa. Then the Indonesian government kindly introduced the "free" visa for Australians. When they recanted a few years ago, tourist locations such as Bali kicked up a huge fuss. With the relationship Indonesia has with Australia, perhaps it won't be too long that the free visa comes back in. Visas are not at all rude. I'm just thankful that Indonesia still allows Australians to apply for a visa on arrival, unlike Australia, as Mic says.
