would you be comfortable booking just the first 2 nights and look for your own accommodation in leisure on your first full day there, after a good night's sleep?
here's how i do it:
i explain i have accommodation for that night, but am looking for the next day. i walk around to accommodations i like the look of and bargain after having been shown the room and checked plumbing, lights etc. not having luggage with me helps, as i look less desperate. i am also incredibly curious, take cards, and make notes for the next trip. eg. i don't like lovina, but should i need to be there again, i now know to book ahead at the sawah lovina.
or: hire transport for an hour to look around for accommodation. even with "commission" you will probably get a better rate than via emails. there are lots of little places up alleyways that have pools etc., with cheaper prices than the more well-known, well-marketed hotels and the driver will know a few to show you. lonely planet guides might help you, too. good luck
