When I look for hotels to stay in I check a regional and an Indonesian agent, hotel website and Indonesian staff ring the hotel to negotiate, my experience is that the cost can go either way...I have to do this for work costings.
If not work I have a small list of small hotels who advertise straight rates, owned locally, if an expat interest the staff are treated well and emails are answered within a day or two. Unfortunately all these hotels are getting more difficult to get into as their popularity increases.
There appears to be scope for a website that highlights straight rate hotels and businesses.
