After much searching and despair I went on wotif again and the Green Garden Hotel came up with availability so I booked that for 7 nights and the last 2 at the Villa Kerti Yasa in Ubud.
My last question (I hope) - what can we book for Christmas Day? I have no idea whether it's just another day in bali or if there are special things happening.
