It was great that you were able to move hotels. Often if you have gone through a travel agent this isn't possible and you basically have to 'wear it' as you've paid upfront and there aren't enough rats arses in the world for the travel agent to care about.
We have arrived at many a hotel where the request has not been made to the hotel/resort so it's been a stand off at reception until you get what you expected and not a great start to a holiday.
To overcome this I now book direct with the hotel on-line and don't pay until we leave. I do my homework and check out online booking agencies so I know what prices to expect. Doing it this way gives you the freedom to move on if you're not happy with the room and floor allocated on arrival... we only move when we have found somewhere else that fits our criteria.
Just one other thing... I have to say that both the animals AND me would have to be drugged in order for me to ever get up close and personal with a lion :-)
