It starts from 31 December 2008. Bank notes can be exchanged at any bank until 31 December 2013, which means they will still be accepted at shops until then at the very least. Then they will still be accepted at Bank Indonesia until 31 December 2018.
There's very little difficulty in the process. It happened a few years ago and you barely noticed the difference, except that for a while there were two styles of various denominations.
So we have some time to change our millions, I think. :)
