In most instances you would need to carry your Passport with you to cash travellers cheques, and yes I know some people will say that you don't have to but in my own experience I have had to.
I don't use ATM's because of the fees associated with withdrawing money and also the stories of skimming that goes on over there, and yes goes on everywhere else too.
