Depending on the length of the dreads you can cut them off then "open them up" to retain some length of hair.
You can then keep the dreads to be used again (added into your own hair)if you want to have it done again later on.
Long painstaking process which leaves the ends a bit thinned out but an option if you don't want to be almost bald :)
