Hi beceth,
We organised a driver for the day to go to Ubud, we weren't planning to go to the Zoo but the driver suggested a few things and it was on the way. The driver / car was 400,000 for the day. We left the hotel at about 8 am, so most probably got to the zoo at about 9.30 - 10 am... spent a good couple of hours there and then headed to Ubud for lunch at about 1 pm.
Casa Luna is awesome, can't express that enough. Or Indus if you want views of rice paddies etc.
The zoo itself would be good for kids, there wasn't too much interaction with emails but the lion cubs were cool. I'm not sure if you would need 4 hours there as I don't have kids but I suppose you can work that out when you get there.
Phuket Zoo was wicked. You had to pay for "photo's" with every animal that you wanted to hold/pat/get a pic with. We pretty much did it with every animal that we could - orangutan(very cool guy), snakes, birds, tiger (scary but amazing), iguana, etc etc.. they even had pit bulls?? go figure. They also had a monkey show and a crocodile show which is out of control! Crazy stuff that they do with the crocs.
Hope this helps :)
