From experience, you need to show a ticket out of Indonesia or your airline from Oz might refuse to take you. Happened to us at Sydney - remedied by buying a ticket from Medan to S'pore. Took a while though so best to get it sorted out before you get to the airport.

Call your airline if in doubt.

Others haven't had probs but I'd err on the safe side.

The reasoning behind it is, as I understand, that if you don't have a ticket out of Indonesia you may be refused entry and then the airline must take you back to your place of origin, at their expense. So that's why when you check in to go to Indonesia, or anywhere else, the airline wants to see that you have a ticket out.
