Some places which call themselves 'warungs' are more like western restaurants than true warungs and not frequented by locals very often. They serve western food as well as local food but are cheaper than the traditional western restaurants.
I've eaten at both and enjoy both.
Then there's kaki limas (food carts). I've also tried their food which is good but I've only eaten food that is wrapped in paper eg sate with rice cake as I've seen the water they wash their plates/bowls in and frankly I think you'd only be asking for trouble if you had food from the plates/bowls.
You could try Padang food which is served from a warung or kaki lima and is good too.
