Sanur has plenty to offer and it's an excellent location. But Bali really is a case of horsee for courses.

There is something for everyone and depending on your age bracket and what sort of experience you are seeking for your home base the decision is much easier from there. As everyone has pointed out, getting around Bali is cheap and quick...so the you needn't feel nailed to the one spot.

If it's party, party, shop till you drop or lots of energy you seek, then the Kuta/Legian precincts are going to suit you perfectly. Kuta is incredibly popular - and with good reason. But it does tend to appeal more broadly to a younger market. That's not to say that anyone over 40 would hate it: nothing could be further from the truth.

If you are looking for a more laid back home base experience where there are less people, the shopping options are different but plentiful good and the dining options are good as well - then Sanur is going to suit you well.

I have personally stayed in Sanur on many occasions and I find it suits my needs really well. The long beach path, the mix of village style shopping and the dining options are really great - I particulary like the pace of the main street. For me, personally, some facets of Kuta's retail precinct resemble the Gold Coast and shopping isn't one of my main reasons for visiting Bali. So a 10 day visit to Bali would see me in Kuta only once or twice - mind you, I still wouldn't go to Bali without spending some time in Kuta - it's all part of the package I reckon.

But it has to be said that this is very much a personal thing because plane-loads of people absolutely love the chaos and energy of Kuta (so did I a few years back) - and that is why I say there is something for everyone in Bali.

If you can give us an idea of where you sit in the age zones and the sort of pace that suits you, then I'm confident you'll get plenty of really helpful advice here. Cheers - kevin
