The great surfer Rob Machado called Bali as his second home now.
Poppies 1 and 2 has plenty of surf shops where you can rent or buy second hand ( resell it after you guys done your trip ). There is no wave to ride around Nusa Dua beach at all. Dreamland is a great place to surf. Try also go to Canggu area. Most locals are hanging out at Kuta Beach or Legian beach to Seminyak.

Kuta and Legian is like Venice Beach crowd.
Seminyak more like Pismo beach area.
Canggu could be one of the great wave to ride equal to Paia in Maui. Not as great as Paia.
Now, Dreamland is the best to check it out.
