your personal tastes it is easy enough to combine a trip to both Singapore & Malaysia. You didn't say sort of things you enjoy seeing or doing when on holidays.
If you fly with Singapore airlines, you get some great deals on hotels, discounts on transport & many other things - I suggest have a look at the Singapore airlines website. You could spend a couple of nights in Singapore & then fly onto either KL or Penang.
While we both like KL we far prefer spending time in Penang.Although there is a lot to see & do in either place.
I personally think you don't just have to be into zoo's or Sentosa Island to enjoy Singapore. The Clarke Quay & Boat Quay area,Little India,Arab St,Chinatown & Marina Square are all interesting to explore. You can have a Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel & then there is the Singapore flyer, some lovely parks & gardens, museums & the food is wonderful. The shopping is also a highlight for many people.
I also suggest you go & look at the visitsingapore website,it's full of ideas on what to see & do.If you contact the Singapore tourism board in Sydney via phone or email they will send you out brochures to give you ideas.
Re Malaysia - if you go to KL I suggest you stay in the Bukit Bintang area. There are a lot of day trips that you could do from KL & you would need a driver. The island of Langkawi is duty free & also interesting to visit & so is Melaka. We love going to Malaysia & can't wait to go back.
If you need ideas on Malaysia I suggest you contact the Malaysian tourism board in either Sydney,Melbourne or Perth via email or phone. There is also a very good forum called Penang travel forum where you could ask more questions & would be useful for finding out more info on anywhere in Malaysia, not just Penang.
Re Penang even though there is a lot to see & do in Georgetown I would suggest if you go that you stay at Batu Feringghi. It's not that far out & there are many nice hotels & apartments in this area. The night markets are also in this area & there are a lot of nice places to eat.
