We often go to Ubud with a stop over at Sukawati markets and spend the day there. I have not been to Bali for 6 years now but when we were there (have been about 5 times since 1998) what we would usually do is hire a bluebird taxi and ask the driver if they were happy to do the trip and leave the meter running while waiting for us and it was actually always really cheap, around 250,000 plus a 50,000 tip. We would spend several hours out - at least 5 or 6 hours. I don;t know how feasible that is now as I don't know what the taxis charge now but i understand you can get a driver and car for the day at around 300k to 400k? - from what I have read on the forum.
