have people on the ground in bali representing them. i know that the company that flight centre use in bali have an australian woman working for them and she handles complaints such as the one you have just described. although she doesnt work for flight centre, she does work closely with them and has access to the top people there in times of trouble. she does manage to pull off some miracles at times!
other agents do not have australians (ie westerners) representing them, qantas holidays for one, and their guests end up spread out all over the island in overbooking situations. their local agents tend to drop them like a hot potato.
the beauty of going through an agent is that they SHOULD have someone on the ground to take charge in these situations, and to go in and bat for the guest. unfortunately this doesnt happen with all companies.
