I had same trouble. I got my mobile unlocked in Aussie day before I left. Not sure they can unlock it in Bali They couldnt get SIM to work in my phone the next day in Bali. I have since been told (not sure how true this is but) it takes a couple of days to happen (was a weekend though). Hence I gave up and went without for a couple of weeks and just used phones in Bali. Bit expensive but its only to check in and let people know where you are and can be contacted in emergency anyway. Didnt miss my mobile at all. Other people might have more up to date info for you though. That was just my first experience.
