I nearlly allways book my own accommodation direct with hotel or apartment owners over the net. Never had a problem.
Just google the internet about places that interest you.
Some that i think would interest you would be.

Jayakatta Private Apartment ( my daughter and her friends stayed there in September and booked through the owners who come from new zealand. Think there is stuff in the archives on this and they have a internet site.)
