to answer this one, our friends in Bali are well that this is a "business" like other posters stated kids dropped down in the morning then picked up at the end of the day. A couple of years ago there was this young burn victim on Jl Legian my brother felt so sorry for her and gave her quite a large sum, we saw her then handover the money to an older lady as did other children, unfortunately did not look like this young benefited much out of his generosity. We have been advised by our friends on bali tourism board and patra not to give money for as long as they keep receiving donations they will keep their children on the streets. I would much rather donate food, clothes etc at least you know the kids will actually benefit :(
