I west for first time last year and am returning in November.
The Barong is in central Poppies 2 ,It's clean and has 24 hour pool, bar and room service. Some say it can get quite noisy though but not as rowdy as The Bounty which is an all night party pub apparently.
Check their website www.baronghotel.com for their prices. Apparently the off street rate is about the same unless your staying a while or theres lots ofpeople. One downside is the lack of english speaking tv channells but inhouse movies make up for it. I reckon the Barong is a good comfortable clean budget hotel centrally located so its not too far to walk down to Kuta Square or up to Melasti markets.
There are heaps of good restaraunts just outside the front door,a good moneychanger and chemist and 24 hour convenience store nearby and its real handy to Pub Bagus and not too far a walk from Paddies
