A couple of years ago we were first in the line when the Garuda checkin opened for our return flight to Perth, only to be told that the plane was full, and given two options. One being that we could stay the night in an undisclosed hotel and come home on the midday flight the next day. Only thing was the midday flight didn't exist.
Or, we could fly to Perth via Melbourne on a Qantas flight and return home some 7-8 hours later that we would normally do. I was a little bewildered how Garuda was going to get us on a Qantas flight, and might I add 3 business class seats were the offering.
Suffice to say neither option kept me happy. The scene turned into one of those you would normally see have seen on the "Airport" show from England, and amazingly the 3 seats that were not there appeared. I guess that further down the line of people someone would have been "shipped" off to another flight .. but not us !!
So .. yes it's happens, much the same as the overbooked hotel room.
