Regarding the laneway to Kuta royal..It is an easy walk to jalan Kartika and everyone in the area are very friendly..I have never felt threatened, even at night time.
You can always catch a bluebird cab from Jalan Kartika after a night out for only 5,000 rupiah and get dropped of right at your villa's door step. Or if going out at night from your villa, most of the villas offer their guests free local phone calls and provide the number of the Blue Bird cabs, cab will pick you up at your doorstep.
I enjoy the walk in the morning and recieving all the the "Selemat Pagi's" from all the passers by :)
