Not going to add much to this discussion because it really doesn't make sense to me. If airlines have differing rules (as suggested) regarding transport of alcohol how did the x-ray attendants know which airline you were travelling with? Did they ask you?
There is nothing to stop you as far as Aus customs are concerned. You could take 100 litres in if you were willing to pay duty.
Perhaps there is concern that you would transfer from check in to carry on, thereby contravening the lags legislation?
If I have left over alcohol I usually pour into plastic bottles as the glass ones are so heavy and have never been picked up. Perhaps someone's bar needed restocking?
