Most of the surf schools charge around 30us for a lesson.Don't have a clue how much the hire guys charge. In my opinion you are wasting your money. While most of the locals over in bali are good surfers it doesn't mean they are qualified to give lessons.Would you go to doctor if your car broke down?
A general lesson over there consists of 10-15 mins practice paddling and popping up on the sand then into waste deep water to be pushed into white water.Seriously you can do that yourself. Most places hire boards over there for 40-50000rph.Have a lesson at your local before you go,learn about rips etc and do abit of surf related fitness.
If you do,do a lesson don't do lesson on kuta/legain due to the number of learners, surf schools and swimmers in the water.Go up to Padma or further where it may be quieter.
