Hi, our daughter and son-in-law live in Jakarta but will be home to Australia at year's end. We stayed with them last year and although I hated the traffic (unbelievable) and pollution (never saw the sun in 7 days), the city is fascinating. Make sure you visit the Batavia restaurant - very interesting.
My daughter has an apartment in the Dharmawangsa Hotel which is a beautiful boutique hotel.
Shopping is Jakarta is unbelievable but you do have to have $$$. We visited an undercover market which had stalls full of handbags etc. (all fake) but good quality - sorry I cannot remember the name of the market. I would suggest that if you do want good copies, you shop in Jakarta. For the cheaper stuff, wait for Bali - our "second home".
