The biggest difference is not only the price which can work both ways either cheaper or dearer but who is advertising the hotel you want to go.
All the airlines can now be booked direct either by the net or phone or through travel agent/booking agency.
Some hotels will only be cheaper if you book a package deal, particularly with the more popular and advertised ones.
It is a sense of accomplishment having done it yourself but a lot depends on what you want out of your holiday, how long you are going for, how many of you going and whether you have the time and can be bothered doing the shopping around.
