You should not have paid, just left. He could not have done anything as long as your luggage hhad been checked in.
But I understand that it was difficult for you. You should have asked to speak with airport management. Recently several airport workerss have been fired due to corruption, including immigration staff. At least they are trying to clean it up.
But you will stil get the request for money when you arrive, "do you have some money form your country for my collection?". Just smile and give a strong no.
I am also married to a Balinese, so I guess the sitation would be somewhat easier for me as they seldom hassel their own.
