we just got back yesterday, stayed in the apartments owned by Max & Suzanne (puketoki.com). Had no problem at all booking privately. Before we looked into booking thru Max & Suzanne I had looked at some owned by a "Mike Gray" - he didn't have the dates that we wanted at the time. I think you just have to go with your gut feeling - thats what I did, and luckily for us it all worked out well. Good luck.
