AN internet report saying Virgin Blue was about to start a direct Bali to Cairns service has bewildered both the airline and the tourism industry.
The report on the Surfers Village Global Surf News website surfaced yesterday afternoon, saying Virgin Blue would fly direct to Bali from Cairns 11 times a week, starting during October.
'This is great news for Brisbane, Gold and Sunshine Coast surfers who previously had to fly via the more expensive and timeconsuming Sydney or Melbourne route.
Also it will prove popular with European back-packers heading from Bali to the Great Barrier Reef,' the web report said.
It was, however, news to Virgin, according to public relations manager Amanda Bolger.
'While Cairns to Bali is certainly somewhere of interest for us, there is definitely no truth in this report,' Ms Bolger said.
One tourism industry official said it appeared the internet report was put together by someone who may have confused it with Jetstar's announcement it would be flying direct to Bali from Darwin.
