These fashionable shawls are made from the wool of the Pashmina goat found in the Himalayas or other Asian high altitudes, often nowadays sold with a silk mixture.
It was Moira at Pacung that brought both my wife and my pocket undone, by selling us a good one a few years ago; since than on the lookout and acquiring a few, the latest in slightly interesting circumstances.
Dining at Bali Bakery one evening, we noticed a lady wearing a pretty shawl at a nearby table. Upon complimenting her upon the lovely item we got to talk a little and she mentioned the name of her shop, in Ubud, where she sells these Pashminas for RP150,000, but alas we were not going there this trip, took her card.
Getting cheeky after my three glasses of Oz Red, I asked her if she had a coat in her car to wear on the way home and quick as a wink she shed the shawl and sold it to us, there and then. What a beauty; off the back not the rack.Further emboldened I asked her if she wanted to take her dress off also and again, quick as a wink, she came back with, "but too small for you Tuan" thus proving that St Patrick brought the craic to Bali as well as Ireland. The score on that night was Bali 2, Tourists nil!
Humour as well as commerce is alive and well in Bali.
